Pacquiao vs Rios is happening November 23rd in Macau, China. (Note: the date in China will actually be November 24th).
For Pacquiao – the Filipino legend who was voted ‘fighter of the decade’ for the 2000s and is a former world champ in 8 weight divisions – the fight may decide the end of his career. He is 34, and has lost his last two fights. As such a third defeat would mean many would expect him to retire, including his trainer Freddie Roach, who said ‘If he loses, I will tell him to retire. If you lose three in a row it’s your time.’ Roach also said that it is his ‘job to protect him.’ Not many people in the world can tell Manny Pacquiao what to do, but it seems Freddie Roach can.
For Brandon Rios, the 27 year old American who has only one defeat in 33 fights, the encounter is an opportunity to shoot straight to the top of boxing, building on his impressive record with the scalp of a legend. It is the biggest fight of his career. Rios is confident too, he says he can ‘catch’ Pacquiao and he will go down. November is the time to find out.
